Applying to higher education

What is a joint application? | What is a separate application?

Applying to higher education study programmes takes place either in joint application or separate application. More often applying for Bachelor’s degree is done through joint application and applying for Master’s is done through separate application. Make sure to check where and when you need to apply to your chosen study programme to ensure you are applying in the correct way. More information can be found from the study programme overviews.

Fill in the application with care and send the required certificates on time in order to be included in the application process.  After you have submitted your application, you can see a list of required attachments on the application form’s confirmation page. This list also includes the information where you need to send the required attachments and by what date. The same information is included in your confirmation email.

What is joint application?

Joint application means that you can apply up to six (6) study programmes with one application. You have to place the programmes in order of preference on the application form. This order is binding and you cannot change it after the application period has ended. There are two joint applications, one in spring and one in autumn.

You apply with the same application form, even if you apply in both spring application periods. These 6 options may include degree programmes from one or several different institutions.

If you are accepted, you will be offered a study place highest on your order of preference list and to which you have enough points to be accepted. You will be offered just one study place even if you have enough points to be accepted to other study options too. For example, if you are accepted to your second option of preference, your lower options (3-6) are cancelled, but you can remain in the waiting list for a possible study place in your first and highest option.

You can accept only one study place in education that begins in the same academic term.

See Joint application to higher education and How to apply in joint application for more information.

What is separate application?

If you apply through separate application, you apply directly to an institution’s study programme. Separate application forms are filled separately for each study programme or institution. Depending on the institution’s application procedure for each programme, you can send, for example, separate applications individually for each study programme in an institution or one separate application form to several study programmes in one institution. There is no limit to how many study programmes you can apply. Applying can be done through the university’s or university of applied sciences’ (UAS) own website or in Studyinfo.

The application periods and application method vary from one education to another. Most of the separate applications take place in Studyinfo.

You can accept only one study place in education that begins in the same academic term.

See How to apply in separate application for more information.

Separate applications – Universities of applied sciences (UAS)

UAS can use separate applications for example when applying to UAS Master’s degree programmes conducted in English. Please note that the same education can include both joint application options and separate application options. Please check that you are applying in the correct application.

Separate applications are used for example in:

  • UAS Master’s degree programmes conducted in English
  • selection of students with Open UAS studies as a degree student

More information is also available from UAS.

Separate applications – Universities

Applicants who have previous studies, for example Bachelor’s degree from a university or Open university studies, usually apply in separate applications.

Examples of separate applications to universities are:

  • Master’s degree programmes for applicant’s with Bachelor’s degrees
  • degree programmes conducted in English
  • transfer student applications
  • selection of students with Open university studies

More information is also available from the universities.

Supplementary application round

If all places reserved are not filled during the primary application round, a secondary application round takes place. Supplementary application round for higher education usually takes place in July-August. More detailed instructions for applying during supplementary application round are given before the application period begins.
